Wild Hogs Keep Moving Despite Hot and Dry April in the Lowcountry

Hot and dry conditions here in South Carolina this April slowed our wild hog movement, but definitely did not stop it!

As always, our pigs went right to all the new greening up plants early in April, and this made the bigger ones harder to find at the feeders since they did not want or need the high carbohydrate corn. However packs of smaller ones were plentiful, and with our low hunting pressure and by watching the cameras closely to stay on top of the movement, our hunters were consistently in the best spots to see action. This allowed Nick, down in South Carilina for the weekend, to join us for two nights. Both provided hog sightings, and he was fortunate enough to kill a huge boar Friday afternoon before dark and then kill a nice 40lb bbq griller out of a big pack Saturday night. Just check out the pic he sent of it just before it came off his grill too!

The following weekend, we had Dustin and his son Adam in camp to chase some turkeys and hogs. We heard lots of birds and got a jake in range but with SC's new rules, he was off limits, and we never got a longbeard in range since they all were very henned up that weekend. However, both saw hogs and Dustin hammered a nice BBQ hog to take home. Check out the pic they sent of their griller about to be devoured too! And while they were here, we also got a chance to talk all about South Carolina wild hog hunting and record a 40 minute podcast with his co host Dell on their D and D Outdoors Podcast that is available on iTunes and Spotify!! Please go check it out if you crave in-depth knowledge of hog hunting being spilled. Thank you guys for having me on!

Then we had Frank, his son in law Daniel and friend Sam down to also chase birds and swine. The boys were on fire and killed a couple of bbq hogs Friday night, but then Sam heated up his barrel with two hogs Saturday night - a 40 lb pig out of a big pack all about the same size and a great 187lb boar. Amazingly enough both those hogs were shot at the same feeder that a huge alligator was spotted at Friday afternoon! Daniel then completed the weekend with a huge limb-hanger turkey weighing just shy of 22lbs with a 10 1/4 in beard and over 1 1/4 in spurs!

Congratulations to everyone, and as always, we can't thank everyone enough for coming and hunting with us here in the lowcountry. We have a few days open in May and June, which are usually surprisingly good since the hogs can't travel far from the water to stay cool and are more on the corn since it is easy and close as well. So give me a call if you still want to get in some great hunting while waiting on deer season to roll back around. We are mostly full for the Fall as well, but we definitely have a few weekends open and would love to have you. Please see our Available Hunt Dates page for all open days!
